The vinery and
his own story

Malgrà winery is located in Mombaruzzo in the heart of the Monferrato near Asti, a territory where the charm, colors, and aromas of viticulture are intense, creating a beautiful, natural setting for as long as its inhabitants can remember.

The winery’s history begins with two vine-growing families, Bonfante and Chiarle. Since the early 1900s, the world of vines and wines was their calling in life. In the beginning, they cultivated vineyards and then sold their grapes, like their fathers and grandfathers did. Soon, however, they began a partnership that allowed them to transform and consolidate their wine production into a flourishing market over the years, based on mutual trust and confidence in constant, trustworthy quality.

Malgrà - L'azienda e la sua storia

Malgrà was founded in the mid-1990s when Giorgio Chiarle decided to begin a new, entrepreneurial wine project. He left his business to the Bonfante cousins and gathered new strengths and skill sets, with the objective of bringing to life a winery that represented a leap in quality compared to the past in terms of production, technology, and commercialization; necessary in order to compete on a national and, above all, international scale.

By uniting passion and diverse competencies, Malgrà soon presented itself to the world with wines that are produced based on a deep and respectful relationship between people and the earth, and people and the vineyards.

From the very beginning, Malgrà has upheld a sort of pact with the vineyards, an ideal union formed by the understanding of the dynamics and needs tied to their cultivation and in respect of the rhythms dictated by nature; in other words, supporting the vocation of the diverse wine territories of Piedmont: Monferrato, Langhe, Roero.

In fact, the earth and its qualities dictate the growing times, methods, and expressions of character of the grapes and thus the wines.

Malgrà derives its name from a popular term used to describe a person considered sui generis; that is, visionary and a bit of a dreamer, almost a kind of “clairvoyant” who is profoundly tied to the earth and especially to its products, which come alive with the work of people—like wine.

Its name, therefore, contains a mission: to produce the classic wines of Piedmont. According to its ideals, Malgrà produces its white wines in their best expressions of Gavi DOCG and Moscato d’Asti DOCG; and its red wines, whether sweet (Brachetto d’Acqui and Brachetto d’Acqui spumante, both DOCG) or dry, produced with barbera—a grape that reaches heights of excellence in the Monferrato as Nizza DOCG and Barbera d’Asti DOCG as “frizzante” and classic, or “superiore.”

Today, Malgrà is part of the Terre Miroglio Family Estates, a group that unites all winemaking properties of the Miroglio family. Other than Malgrà, this includes Tenuta Carretta, located in Piobesi d’Alba in the heart of the Roero, and Edoardo Miroglio Wine Cellar of Elenovo, located in Tracia, Bulgaria.
